isochronous data transmission

Definition

form of synchronous data transmission where similar (logically or in size) data frames are sent linked to a periodic clock pulse or external common event

Notes

  • NOTE 1 In an Isochronous transmission the sender and the receiver are synchronized in such a way that they send/receive during the same time slots. This implies the existence of an implicit or explicit time schedule table that needs to be consistent over the entire network.
  • NOTE 2 The term is synonymous to cyclic data transmission (3.2.6) or to Rate Monotonic Scheduling.
